The Capital City State Trail is a joint venture formed between Dane County, the Cities of Madison and Fitchburg, and the Department of Natural Resources via a memorandum of agreement signed in 1998. The trail provides a unique cultural and aesthetic experience traversing wetlands, prairies, creeks and lakes, uplands and woods. The trail is surfaced with asphalt and is suitable for bicycles, skaters, strollers, walkers, joggers and wheelchairs. A state trail pass is required for all people age 16 or older biking or in-line skating on the Capital City Trail in the Lewis Nine Springs E-way from Nob Hill Road to Verona Road.
Envisioned as a connector for the Military Ridge State Trail and the Glacial Drumlin State Trail, the Capital City State Trail officially opened on June 3, 2000, with the completion of 9.5 miles of trail from Nob Hill Road to Verona Road. The shared-use trail is now over 20 miles in length and extends (almost contiguously) from the Military Ridge State Trail to E. Buckeye Road providing connections to the new Lower Yahara River Trail, Military Ridge State Trail, Badger State Trail, Southwest Bike Path, Cannonball Trail, and Starkweather Creek Path.
Plans are currently underway for the Glacial Drumlin to Capital City Connector Trail that would complete the Capital City Trail vision.
