Indian Lake Aeration System Supports Fish

Park users should use caution while on the ice

MADISON, WI – December 05, 2018: On December 6, 2018, Dane County Parks will begin aerating Indian Lake in Indian Lake County Park. The aeration system will circulate water, allowing a portion of the lake to remain ice free and increasing the oxygen levels in the water. Low oxygen levels can be a problem in the winter when snow and ice limit sunlight and the oxygen production of aquatic plants decreases. This system will help prevent winter fish kills that can occur if oxygen levels are too low.

Park users are urged to use caution if they are out on the ice or near shoreline areas.  Once the lake is frozen and the ice has reached adequate thickness, Dane County Parks will install a warning barrier around the open water area surrounding the aeration system. Dane County Parks advises all park users and their pets to stay off the lake until colder temperatures create greater ice depth and to use caution on the ice all winter long.

Indian Lake County Park, located in northwestern Dane County in the Town of Berry, is a popular recreational destination.  Dane County and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources have been restoring the fishery and recently stocked the lake with both bass and bluegill.
